SCARPITTA L. - Peacebuilding and Reconciliation (20h)
This optional course examines the theories and strategies for effective peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts in countries affected by conflict. Starting with an introduction to the key foundation concepts, the course will unpack key conflict drivers, actors and dynamics, mediation and conflict resolution tools as well as justice, accountability and transitional justice mechanisms. Case studies will include the Western Balkans, the Middle East as well as Northern Ireland and Colombia. Through a mix of theoretical and case-studies and group discussions, the course will aim to provide the students with the opportunities to develop key political skills to understand the complexity of conflict, conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts thus offering a deeper understanding on the challenges and opportunities for effective reconciliation and social healing to prevent the re-emergence of conflict. The course will also integrate a gender perspective, looking in particular at the impact of conflict on women and girls and the role of women in effective peacebuilding, reconciliation and post-conflict rehabilitation and prevention efforts.
