PHINNEMORE P. – Brexit: A Case Study of European Disintegration (8h)

The seminar aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Brexit as a case study of European disintegration, focusing on the UK's historical relationship with the EU, the consequences of withdrawal and the nature of the post-Brexit UK-EU relationship. Students will critically analyse the legal, political, and economic implications of Brexit and assess its long-term impact on UK-EU relations.

By the end of this seminar, students should be able to:

  • Critically assess the UK's historical relationship with the European Union, with a focus on its role as an "awkward partner."
  • Understand the complexities involved in the process of negotiating a member state's withdrawal from the EU, particularly through the lens of Brexit.
  • Evaluate the significance of key legal and political documents, such as the Withdrawal Agreement, the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
  • Analyse the long-term economic, social, and political impacts of Brexit on both the UK and the EU.
  • Engage in informed debate about the future trajectory of UK-EU relations and the ongoing implications of post-Brexit frameworks such as the Windsor Framework.

The teaching methods will include interactive lectures and case study discussions, encouraging students to explore the practical and political implications of Brexit.
